Hot mix must be compacted before it cools below workable temperature, and mat cooling drives the great majority of joint failures. Below 50°F ambient, production typically falls about 30% because material cools before it can be rolled. The compaction window scales roughly with the square of lift thickness — thick lifts hold heat far longer than thin overlays.
