How to use this calculator
- Enter Floor area in sq ft.
- Enter Coverage per box in sq ft.
- Press Calculate. The highlighted row is your order quantity; the note beneath it translates the number into real-world terms.
Formula & constants
Boxes = area × 1.1 ÷ coverage per box (usually 18–24 sq ft, printed on the carton). Buy all boxes from one production lot and acclimate them 48 hours on site. Every default in the fields above is editable — when your supplier’s spec sheet lists a different density, coverage rate or price, enter that number instead. The waste and compaction allowances follow common trade practice; see our methodology page for the derivation of each formula and the standards it references.
Where this fits in the project
Interior finishing runs framing-out: studs, insulation, drywall, then paint and floor coverings. Measure once and reuse the same wall and floor areas across each material takeoff.
How this connects to your project
No quantity stands alone — each material in the chain depends on the ones around it. These are the planning steps that pair with the laminate flooring calculator:
- Flooring Calculator — Laminate is a specific flooring type.
- Tile Calculator — Laminate vs tile flooring comparison.
- Carpet Calculator — Laminate vs carpet comparison.
- Flooring Cost Calculator — Laminate is typically the most affordable hard surface flooring.
- Baseboard Calculator — Baseboard covers the laminate expansion gap.
Frequently asked questions
Does laminate need underlayment?
Yes — foam underlayment (often pre-attached) plus a 6-mil vapor barrier over concrete subfloors.
Why acclimate laminate?
HDF cores expand with humidity; 48 hours on site prevents post-install gapping and peaking.

Estimates are for planning. Material densities, coverage rates and prices vary by region and supplier — confirm final quantities before ordering, and check local code where structural or electrical work is involved.
