How to use this calculator
- Enter Area to cover in sq ft.
- Enter Sheet size.
- Press Calculate. The highlighted row is your order quantity; the note beneath it translates the number into real-world terms.
Formula & constants
Sheets = area ÷ 32 (4×8 sheet) × 1.1 waste. Run subfloor sheets perpendicular to joists with staggered end joints; leave 1/8 in gaps per APA spacing. Every default in the fields above is editable — when your supplier’s spec sheet lists a different density, coverage rate or price, enter that number instead. The waste and compaction allowances follow common trade practice; see our methodology page for the derivation of each formula and the standards it references.
Where this fits in the project
Framing quantities chain together: footings support posts, joists set the deck frame, and surface boards follow. Price hardwood and specialty stock in board feet, sheet goods by the sheet.
How this connects to your project
No quantity stands alone — each material in the chain depends on the ones around it. These are the planning steps that pair with the plywood calculator:
- Lumber Calculator — Plywood is sheet goods vs dimensional lumber.
- Stud Calculator — Wall sheathing covers studs.
- Roof Truss Calculator — Roof sheathing attaches to trusses.
- Deck Calculator — Some deck surfaces use plywood underlayment.
- Board Foot Calculator — Plywood sold by sheet vs board foot pricing.
- Siding Calculator — Exterior siding is installed over plywood sheathing.
Frequently asked questions
OSB or plywood for sheathing?
OSB is cheaper and structurally equivalent for most sheathing; plywood handles moisture exposure and holds fasteners better.
What thickness for subfloor?
23/32 in T&G over joists at 16 in OC; 7/8–1⅛ in for 24 in OC or tile-ready stiffness.

Estimates are for planning. Material densities, coverage rates and prices vary by region and supplier — confirm final quantities before ordering, and check local code where structural or electrical work is involved.
