How to use this calculator
- Enter Footprint incl. overhangs in sq ft.
- Enter Pitch multiplier.
- Press Calculate. The highlighted row is your order quantity; the note beneath it translates the number into real-world terms.
Formula & constants
Roof surface = building footprint × pitch multiplier, plus overhangs. Include eaves: a 40 × 30 house with 1 ft overhangs is a 42 × 32 footprint before the pitch factor. Every default in the fields above is editable — when your supplier’s spec sheet lists a different density, coverage rate or price, enter that number instead. The waste and compaction allowances follow common trade practice; see our methodology page for the derivation of each formula and the standards it references.
Where this fits in the project
Roof takeoffs start from the footprint corrected by pitch: get true area from the roof square footage calculator, convert to squares, then to shingle bundles or metal panels. Size gutters from the same perimeter measurement.
How this connects to your project
No quantity stands alone — each material in the chain depends on the ones around it. These are the planning steps that pair with the roof square footage calculator:
- Roofing Calculator — Roof area in squares is the fundamental roofing input.
- Roof Pitch Calculator — Pitch multiplier converts footprint to actual roof area.
- Shingle Calculator — Shingle bundles are calculated from roof squares.
- Roofing Cost Calculator — Roofing cost is estimated from total square footage.
- Metal Roofing Calculator — Metal panel quantity comes from roof area.
- Gutter Calculator — Roof perimeter determines gutter length.
- Rainwater Harvesting Calculator — Roof area determines rainwater collection potential.
- Solar Panel Calculator — Available roof area limits solar panel quantity.
Frequently asked questions
Do overhangs count in roof area?
Yes — the roof extends past the walls. Add eave and rake overhang to the footprint before applying the pitch factor.
Footprint vs floor area?
Use the outline the roof covers — a two-story house has twice the floor area but the same roof footprint.

Estimates are for planning. Material densities, coverage rates and prices vary by region and supplier — confirm final quantities before ordering, and check local code where structural or electrical work is involved.
