Formula & constants
Hot mix is 93–96% aggregate and 4–7% bitumen binder by weight. Total mix tons × binder % = binder tons. 100 tons of mix at 5.5% binder contains 5.5 tons of bitumen. Every default in the fields above is editable — when your supplier’s spec sheet lists a different density, coverage rate or price, enter that number instead. The waste and compaction allowances follow common trade practice; see our methodology page for the derivation of each formula and the standards it references.

Paving is sequential: the site is excavated to design depth, a gravel base course is placed and compacted, hot mix is laid and rolled, and the cured surface is protected with sealcoat every 2–3 years.
