Chloride is far harder on concrete than asphalt. It drives surface scaling and, once it penetrates to the reinforcement, corrodes the steel and spalls the slab. Asphalt flexes and tolerates salt well — its winter enemy is water entering cracks and freezing, which is why crack sealing matters more than salt choice on asphalt.
