Chloride is far harder on concrete than asphalt. It drives surface scaling and, once it penetrates to the reinforcement, corrodes the steel and spalls the slab. Asphalt flexes and tolerates salt well — its winter enemy is water entering cracks and freezing, which is why crack sealing matters more than salt choice on asphalt. All default values are editable — when your supplier's data sheet or local code says otherwise, use that number.

Does salt damage asphalt?
Only mildly. Asphalt's real winter damage comes from water infiltrating cracks and expanding as it freezes. Sealed cracks and good drainage protect asphalt far more than avoiding salt does.
Why is salt worse for concrete?
Chloride ions penetrate the surface, cause scaling, and eventually reach the reinforcing steel, where they corrode it. Corroding rebar expands and spalls the concrete from within.
How much life does salt cost concrete?
It depends heavily on annual chloride load, concrete quality and air entrainment. Heavily salted concrete without proper air entrainment can lose a substantial share of its expected service life; well-made, sealed concrete loses far less.
Can I protect concrete from salt?
Yes. Use properly air-entrained mix, apply a penetrating sealer, avoid deicers entirely during the first winter, and keep application rates at the minimum effective level.
Should I choose asphalt for a snowy climate?
It is a strong argument for it. Asphalt tolerates both freeze-thaw flexing and deicing chemicals better than concrete, which is one reason it dominates northern driveways.
